what inspired my commission calculator
After 14 years of being a full-time artist, I’ve received countless emails and DMs about custom commissions from first-time art buyers curious about starting an original art collection. These clients are an absolute honor to work with, and I am deeply passionate about demystifying the creative process. I want to invite as many people as possible into the art world because I believe living with original art is a subtle yet powerful, lasting experience that can be passed on for generations. It is all the more meaningful when you, the patron, get to be involved in bringing a painting to life that connects directly to your personal story.
I work with seasoned collectors and new collectors alike, and I always welcome collaboration. I want to encourage everyone to play around with their dream painting and see transparent pricing upfront, without the intimidation of having to ask. Transparency is empowering, and that’s why I built the Commission Calculator—as a tool of empowerment for art appreciators.
After years of professional practice, I have a clear understanding of how long my process takes and how to pay myself a living wage for specialized labor. Being fair to my clients while being able to support myself through my art are both essential to me, and this new tool was developed out of that exact desire for balance.
how i built it
I collaborated with Chris and Meagan of Vibes DIY in Portland, Oregon, using their brand new App building tool. Chris’ customizable AI tool made it possible for me to chat with his program and build exactly what I wanted for my clients through prompts. Chris and I worked closely together to smooth out the user experience and add it to my website. As an artists who does not like what I am seeing with generative AI that is stealing art, music, and writing from living artists without consent, it was challenging for me to confront the truth that utilizing Chris’ AI tool was the only way I could afford to build my idea as a one woman show who whats control of what I put my name on and has very little coding experience. I greatly appreciated Chris and Meagan’s support, and Chris’s enthusiasm for his AI tool being used to promote human creativity helped me open up and take the leap into working together. It took about a month of hard work and collaboration, but we are all very happy with how the Commission Calculator turned out, and I hope you are too.
